The Start of My Fantastic Trip

As I said in a previous post, I told you that I was going to go to Philadelphia, PA for a convention type thing called Fiber Philadelphia.

This is the definition of Fiber Philadelphia: "In the past 20 years, the boundaries between High/Low art and medium specific recognition have been blurred. Unlike the other major craft media, textile artists have the freedom of transcending materials, unbound from tradition. Although many choose to continue to work with historic materials and methods, many have branched out to explore the infinite possibilities of materials and techniques. One can weave metal, clay, even light. Quilts are not necessarily bound by thread or cloth and vessels can be more than objects to contain physical matter; they can reject functionality and explore conceptual notions of spiritual and metaphysical containment."

and here is the website :  http://www.fiberphiladelphia.org/index.htm

I got to attend 4 galleries which included the Crane Arts Building, Snyderman-Works Gallery, Indigo Arts Gallery and Wexler Gallery.

I took tons of pictures of so many amazing pieces of work.

So, my mother and brother started our journey at 7:30 am and got to Philly by 11. We checked in at our hotel and then immediately got started. We headed over to the Crane Arts Building where everything inside wasn't open until noon. They did have a couple of open exhibits, including work by Sarah Wondrack.

She created these magnificent pieces from materials like bandaids, colored pencils, and coffee stained tracing paper.
"Growing Pains", bandaids, Sarah Wondrack
"Harmonious Entities", coffee stained tracing paper & copper wire, Sarah Wondrack

"Synergy", colored pencils, Sarah Wondrack

We then moved into a gallery inside the Crane Arts Building called the Indigo Arts Gallery.

This is where we saw pieces of art that have been sent over from all different parts of the world, including India, Mexico, Turkey, U.S and Nigeria.
"Tiger and Antelope" Montu Chitrakar

India
"Dragon Lady" Artist Unknown

Turkey
"The Gods Give Life to the Sacred Places of Earth" Jose Benitez Sanchez

Mexico
"Cityscape" Ollie Cox

Virginia

"Redneck Jones" Shawn Crookshank

I absolutely loved this piece, it's amazing.

Once the rest of the building was open we ventured on in.

We stepped into a room with all these lovely pieces of art in it.
"So bitter were my feelings" Magali Rizzo

"Thicket" Deborah Courtney Warner

"Winter Gold" Adela Akers
"Point Haze" Lewis Knauss
"Stille Life/ Daisies" Joan Dreyer, made of dental x-rays, plastic and metal
"Sea Foam" Linda Celestian
"Words Unspoken Series:37,499 days -June 9, 1932-December 31, 1941" Ann Wessmann

This piece won "The Patricia Malarcher Award" for Best in Show and won $1,000.
"One Day" Jodi Colella
"Bystander" June Lee

Won Second Place and got $500.

"Naga (1-5)" Emily DuBois
"Radiant Interceptions: Seasons" Cynthia Friedman
"Inside is Outside" Andrea Noeske-Porata
"waking with you..." Joetta Maue
"Ice River Vine Bound" Arl Sklar-Weinstein
"Ancestor Chairs" Reineke Hollander

THIS WAS MY FAVORITE, throught the entire trip.
"Cry Wolf" Heather Ujiie
This was an interactive piece of work. There were these balls lying in the front made of articles written by critics, about the artist's work. The viewer throws the balls at these structures to hit them down to reveal even more critiques on his work.

I got to experience it, and it as actually really fun.

I forgot the artist's name, but I loved his/her work.
"Zipperwall Quilt 2" Bryan Day
"Humanoids" Brigitte Amarger

made of bones organs, prostheses, x-rays, scanners

This video is of the work of art. It was created, and meant to move to be like humans moving.
When I saw it, my heart stopped because I thought it was an actual person.
